033 Sweet #2 - montpype and pastel

Not sure how many more of these sweetie pictures I will do but rest assured there will be a few, I may do these for the rest of the year. Merry Boxing Day :).

032 a Murano Inspired Sweet - monotype and pastel

I have been inspired by some murano glass sweeties and a Wayne Theibauld book of hand coloured prints, some of garishly coloured sweets. Also, a  Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Merry Christmas to you all! Please accept today's print of a Christmas tree as my christmas card to each and everyone of you x

030 Shopping trolley

We went christmas supermarket shopping this morning hence today's drawing of a trolley. In red to evoke the passions that run high during such events. I managed to maintain an oasis of calm around me, mostly, and got out with my life, and booze and twiglets.

I like he way it is slipping off the bottom of the paper just like one of those runaway trolleys.

029 Chicken - mono print

I used yesterday's drawings as a basis for a load of mono prints. I think this is the best one, it's so tricky to choose one but I have, and this is it. I chose this one because of how quick it looks, it was a quick draw, and it has the feel of a Chinese brush painting. I also like the accidental black splodge that the chicken is looking at or is it shadow... I have a rediscovered love of mono printing!

028 Chickens

I am fortunate enough to be able to see our chickens from the studio window, so I was able to do a few quick sketches without going out into the damp and cold.

027 Tools - mono prints

I can't talk about what I have been making today but I can show you some of the tools I was using a saw, a power drill, a flat head screwdriver and a hammer.

025 Chicken - Linoprint

I have actuLly used off cuts from the kitchen floor to make this 'lino' print. Rubber floor print just doesn't sound right. Anyway here is one of our chickens. Ironically it's a white one.

024 Chicken - mono print

023 Ukulele Side Bender form - white pencil on printing ink

I did a bit of printing yesterday and used this piece of paper to roll off excess ink. Today I have removed this part from my ukulele side bender to remake and now have combined the two things to create this cheeky little drawing.

Sunday 15 December 2013

022 Ukulele - mono print

I had some fun doing some mono printing this afternoon, fun because my technique needs some work. This was the pick of the day.

021 My Left Hand - pencil

I heartily recommend this drawing excercise to anyone who wants to improve their drawing. Set yourself up so that you can see your left hand but not the paper you are about to draw on. Then spend a bit of time looking at your left hand. Really looking. No really really looking. Now start to draw a line. While still looking at your hand and not the drawing. As you trace your eyes along the creases and folds of your hand draw exactly what you see, without looking. When you feel you have finished stop and look at your drawing. Now do at least one every day for a week. I guarantee you will get better. Go on I dare you. When you have done that, do the same but use your non dominant hand.

020 Mince pie tin - graphite stick

Oh how I love mince pie season. Everything in moderation though, one year I ate so many I didn't want to eat any for a few christmasses. I'm being very careful and regulating my intake these days, I only have them with a mug of tea or coffee. But there are no rules about how much tea or coffee I should drink, maybe there should be....

019 Sweet Dumpling Squash with egg and pine needles

I have now completed a week of squash pictures. This one in an old mastery type style features some extra elements. The egg is the first egg from one of our chickens and the pine needles from our christmas tree that we collected today. I do enjoy it when my day spits out subject matter!

018 Sweet Dumpling Squash - oil

I might have just invented a new art movement - pastel fauvism. I've used a lot of green to describe the squash so I banned green for today's painting. This is what happened.

017 Sweet Dumpling - oil

Ahhhh back on the oil paint, possibly where I feel most comfortable, apart from maybe my bed....

Haven't decided whether to squeeze another squash picture out tomorrow or find a new victim/subject

Monday 9 December 2013

016 Sweet Dumpling Squash - watercolour

Today's journey into the squash is in watercolour, haven't used watercolour since year two of this project. The painting nearly lost cohesion but I think I managed to pull it back in!

015 Sweet Dumpling Squash - pen and ink

Today's investigation of the sweet dumpling squash is pen and ink, I have done done seven drawings today each one getting simpler and simpler until this one which is really an exploration of the shape. Which I expect will serve me well over the next few days as I make more squash pictures.

Saturday 7 December 2013

014 Sweet Dumpling - lino print

Today's investigation of the sweet dumpling butternut squash is through the medium of the Lino print. The squash is seen from below showing off its wonderful stripes. Like a big healthy green humbug!

013 Sweet Dumpling Squash - charcoal and electric rubber

We have an amazing crop of these squashes from the garden. Subsequently squash is what we are eating a lot at the minute so what a great thing to celebrate by spending a bit more time on it and using a few different media over the next few days. Today charcoal tomorrow oil or maybe more Lino or fresco or light projection.... We shall see. I am thoroughly enjoying the freedom that this year is offering me already and I am not even two weeks in!

And oh yes an electric rubber. Or electric eraser for my American friends it's a pen like thing with a whizzy rubber end that spins around so you almost write with it like a negative pencil! See how I have signed and numbered with the electric spinny rubbery eraser thing.

012 Morandi Transcription - Lino print

I don't make prints very often but I enjoy it when I do, this was particularly good fun as I also framed this little Morandi original that I got for my birthday this year. What a great opportunity to make my own version of his exquisite little collection of bottles and vases. I used Lino because it is quick and I have all of the stuff in my studio plus I can make it start to finish very quickly so it suits daily doing very well. But no, I am not planning a year of Lino cuts anytime soon, I couldn't afford the massage and chiropractic bills.

This is mine

This is mine with Giorgio Morandi's

011 Allsort with Pins - oil on linen

This little motif was in last years big painting, I thought as I have been taking stock of this project it might be interesting to revisit some of the ideas touched upon in the other years of Dan Young, Daily.

010 Red (not very hot) Chilli Pepper - sharpie marker and pencil

My show came down today, a little sad. It was really interesting to take stock of the last five years and talk to a lots of people about my daily paintings. So a big ole thanks to everyone who came along to find out what I've been up to for the last five years and I am really pleased how much everyone seemed to like it. Especially the little girl who was all but running around the gallery identifying the subjects of the pictures. I'm looking forward to a good lie in tomorrow and getting on with some more daily paintings! Here's to the next five years...

009 Eagle Star building - sharpie marker

This is he tallest building in Cheltenham, there are regular abseiling charity events that happen from the top. Not with me I hasten to add. I can just see it from the gardens gallery so I drew it. That's the kind of guy I am. See it. Draw it. Don't abseil down it.

008 Balloon Boy - sharpie marker and watercolour

The was an inordinate amount of small children walking past the gallery with white balloons this today, it turned out they were from a cleaning company or something equally mundane (the balloons not the children). However, this little chappie had a red one and being the odd one I felt a strange compunction to do a quick blind pen sketch (called blind because I look at he subject but not at the drawing, not that I close my eyes!) and I got to use red paint. I never found out where the red one came from, somewhere really good, I expect.
